Gardening tips for the beginning of autumn

Mowing, fertilizing, scarifying: In our gardening tips, we explain what is important for your lawn in the fall and how to prepare it properly for the cold season.

Before the coldest time of the year begins, your lawn also needs a bit of care. There are a few things to bear in mind. As in spring and summer, the temperature also plays an important role.

Mowing the lawn

Basically, you can mow your lawn while it is still growing. You should make sure that you don't mow it too short. A length of around 5 cm is sufficient for an autumn cut. You should make sure that you only mow your lawn for as long as the temperature allows. Below 10 degrees Celsius, the fresh cut will unfortunately no longer help your lawn, but rather harm it.

Scarifying & reseeding

You can scarify your lawn not only in spring, but also in fall. Especially before winter, it's worth removing weeds, fungi, thatch and moss so that your lawn goes into the winter break in good health. Mushrooms and weeds should be cut out completely first. Otherwise you will spread the remains around the lawn and they will grow back. Moss and thatch can be easily removed by scarifying. After scarifying, your lawn is better aerated and the roots are directly supplied with nutrients and water again. You can simply reseed the gaps in the lawn. However, you shouldn't do this if it's already too cold. Then the seeds will no longer germinate and the lawn can no longer compact.

Fertilize the lawn

You can also fertilize your lawn in autumn. You should make sure that the fertilizer has a high potassium content. Unlike in spring. There you fertilize with a fertilizer that has a high proportion of nitrogen. The nitrogen stimulates growth. But we want to avoid that for the winter. Potash, on the other hand, makes the grass resistant to diseases and frost. After fertilizing, the lawn should be watered again so that the fertilizer really gets into the soil.

Also note: You should always adapt the care measures to the weather conditions.
